Summary Of The Book
L. K. Advani’s My Country, My Life is a beautiful account of the life of this Indian political leader, written by himself. Advani has seen a lot of changes in India during his long political career that spans over a time period of six decades. During the Partition of India and Pakistan, he had to leave his beloved land Sindh that is in Pakistan now.
L. K. Advani began his life in India as an immigrant. He was immensely affected by the partition and the sense of displacement it rendered to the millions affected. He describes this feeling expressively here and gives a first-person narrative of the greatest Indian tragedies ever. Post-independence, Advani became a political activist. He not just witnessed, but also participated in almost most of the major developments that took place post-1947 in India.
My Country, My Life presents a nuanced perspective on the political evolution of independent India as perceived by Advani. The book is an interesting account of Advani’s struggle and efforts during the difficult phases that the country had to go through. He talks about the major happenings of his political life such as the Emergency period, his famous Ram Rath Yatra, the year he served as India’s Deputy Prime Minister, and his life as Home Minister in the Vajpayee-led government of the National Democratic Alliance.
The Ram Rath Yatra finds special place in Advani’s autobiography, as it showcases his efforts to reconstruct the Ram temple in Ayodhya. This led to the biggest movement amongst the common man of India. This Yatra also resulted in a debate on the real meaning of secularism. The book talks about Advani’s seminal contributions to Indian politics and details how he, along with Atal Bihari Vajpayee, created the Bharatiya Janata Party as a possible option for governing India.
