Desert Royal by Jean Sasson

Published in the year 2004, Desert Royal is a novel that revolves around the troubles faced by women in Saudi Arabia, and Sultana’s fight for women’s rights.

Summary Of The Book

Desert Royal is the third book by Sasson, which revolves around the life of Princess Sultana behind the veil. In the previous books of the series, the readers were provided with shocking insights into the lives of those who are a part of Saudi Arabia’s royal family. Although royal women are fabulously wealthy, they are virtually prisoners under subjection to the male members of their family, including their sons.

The princess had three children, and became oblivious to what was happening around her while bringing them up. When her children grew up, she found herself with a void in her life, which caused her to become addicted to alcohol. This caused her to fear that her husband would divorce her. She also tried everything possible to stop her niece from marrying a hateful man. The princess soon realized that there were several women needed her help.

As she had influence and money, she began to rescue girls who were being sold as sex-slaves to the rich and royal families. Sultana’s desire to fight for women’s rights in Muslim nations was reignited when the extended family goes on camping trip, which brings the princess and her relatives face-to-face with their nomadic roots. This novel also has some light moments, when Sultana and her daughters visit their royal cousin at his Paradise Palace. This edition comes with a new chapter, and contains a letter from Sultana, urging women to fight for their abused sisters’ freedom around the world.
