Windhaven by Martin George R. R.

On the water world of Windhaven, the silver-winged flyers bring promise, song and stories. However, their wings are in dwindling numbers and the future of their race is up for grabs in this fantasy novel by G. R. R. Martin and Lisa Tuttle.

Summary of the Book

Flyers hold the hope of the world. In Windhaven, human beings weren’t native to the water world. They came to it through a colony starship which crash landed on the planet. The planet was a water world, a collection of islands where the survivors huddled together. Communication was all but impossible until the low gravity helped the humans fashion wings from the spaceship and take to the skies. The flyers were seen as champions of promise, bringers of news and carriers of gossip. However, their numbers dwindled over the years. The wings were always in short supply and they were coveted by an elite caste. Maris of Amberly is a fisherman’s daughter, adopted by a flyer. She hopes to fly one day, but the wings will go to her stepbrother, Coll, the legitimate son who wants nothing to do with them. Maris seeks to fight against the system and prove that the wings must go to those who deserve them, not through inheritance. However, in beginning this battle, she faces a new threat.
