Summary of the Book

Maya Angelou recounts her autobiography in seven-volume series. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is the first in the series, which describes the African-American poet and writer’s conviction of love, and strength of character in surpassing racism and all the trauma associated with it. Maya’s story in this volume begins at the age of three and ends with her becoming a mother at the young age of 16. The book strongly, yet poignantly describes her inner struggles in transforming herself into an assertive, dignified young woman, from being a victim of racism which had once induced inferiority complex in her. Her autobiography is not just a personal story; it is rather a critique of a heinous part of human history called racism, and a celebration of motherhood, especially of a Black American.
